Research abstract

The objective of this Phase I work is to evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of a Modular Enginer for vehicular applications having major advantages in fuel economy and low poluutant emissions. The Modular Engine is an advanced engine concept using exhaust gas regeneration and multi-stage air compression with intercooling to achieve major efficiency and other advantages. An analytical model is used to accurately predict the thermodynamic conditions and performance of this engine, based on well-defined engine processes and test data from comparable engines and devices. The overall engine and its components are designed sufficiently to determine overall configuration, size, and weight. The achievement of thermal efficiencies in the 55% to 65% range is anticipated and is based on substantial engine development performed to date. The unique combustion process of the Modular Engine permits multi-fuel utilization with inherently low pollutant emissions. The use of proven components and technology reduces engine development effort and minimizes the risks of achieving the predicted benefits. Anticipated Benefits: The specific benefits of successful development of this new engine for personal, commercial, and military vehicle use include reduced fuel consumption and costs; reduced pollutant emissions and improved air quality; increased practicality and range with CNG or renewable (alcohol) fuels; and practical, durable, reliable engine operation.
