Research abstract

The research team proposes to combine the expertise of QSI in modeling, diagnostic analysis, model-based reasoning and analysis, real-time embedded diagnosis in HUMS applications, with the strong domain knowledge of engines, engine system diagnostics, andexisting FMECA information of Pratt & Whitney (P&W), the OEM for the F100 engine system, to develop a FMECA driven EHM design approach. FMECA provides an understanding of the potential faults in the system, their manifestation as functional failures(effects), their probabilities of occurrence, and system level implications in terms of safety and mission criticality. A comprehensive EHM solution needs to leverage this understanding to identify and implement an optimum level of embedded and offboarddiagnostic and prognostic requirements. However, FMECA has been a manual engineering process performed only in initial design stage, but not kept up-to-date with field data and design changes. A key innovation of the proposed effort is that the failuremodes and effects information, along with functional and structural hierarchy and cause effect relationships are captured in models that are easy to maintain and update. This model is then utilized by the TEAMS toolset to perform FMECA analysis andgenerate the resultant EHM and ground support solution. The anticipated benefits of this project are a comprehensive FMECA driven Health Management environment that detects
