Research abstract

The use of polymer matrix composites aboard U.S. Navy submarines has been limited to applications outside the pressure hull. However, there has been increasing interest in developing composite materials for structural applications inside the pressure hull. This new interest in composite materials is due to the increased need for low cost, lightweight, corrosion-free alternatives to submarine metallic component applications. A serious technical issue that has limited the use of composites inside submarines is the flammability, smoke and toxic gas emissions of polymer matrix composites. The use of composites inside naval submarines is regulated by MIL-STD-2031, which contains test methods and requirements for flammability characteristics such as flame spread, smoke and gas generation, heat release, ignitability, oxygen-temperature index and long term outgassing. TRI/Austin proposes to develop a polymer matrix composite material that complies with the flammability and smoke toxicity requirements of MIL-STD-2031, while possessing the mechanical properties necessary for structural applications inside a submarine. The feasibility of developing this composite material will be demonstrated during Phase I by defining materials requirements, conducting a materials survey, classifying and selecting candidate materials and performing preliminary screening tests.
