Research abstract

Wavelet techniques, in the form of time-scale or time-frequency analysis, have potential applications in the field of communications. This proposal addresses three research areas to be developed in this discipline. (1) Waveforms constructed of wavelets themselves demonstrate fractal, or multi-scale, properties that can make them useful for data modulation, scale-division multiple access (SDMA) and spread spectrum. Fractal modulation techniques leading to all of these constructs will be developed. (2) A class of waveforms -- based on coefficient matrices for othogonal wavelets of compact support -- already shown to be useful for covert, or low prbability of detection and intercept transmission, will be adapted to yield MA waveform sets having both covert properties and potentially higher capacity per unit bandwidth than conventional techniques. (3) The theory of Weyl-Heinsenberg frames will be applied to the construction of real-number error-correcting codes suitable for use of "DSP" channels where burst or dropout errors may predominate. Anticipate Benefits: The project has commercial application to progressive transmission of imagery, noninterfering multiple access/multiplexing for users at scaled data rates, multimedia communications, digital radio, satellite direct broadcast, cable TV, municipal communications and covert networks. Military and other agency users may benefit from the new technologies inherent in wavelet-based communications.
