Research abstract

The overall objective of the proposed SBIR project is to develop a highly accurate, dynamically adaptive grid, Navier-Stokes prediction methodology which will be applicable to the problem of dynamic stall. four tasks are proposed: (1) evaluation of trade-offs and identification of potential roadblocks associated with three adaptive mesh technologies: spectral element schemes, embedded-grid schemes and overset (or "Chimera") structured schemes: (2) development of a novel grid refinement indicator based on information-entropy and flow physics/topology; (3) initial implementation and demonstration of the proposed methodology on a two-dimensional calculation of dynamic stall; and (4) layout of a detailed system design. The expected result of the Phase I research will be demonstration of the proposed method in 2D, and the construction of a development roadmap for a 3D high-order accuracy methodology in Phase II.
