Research abstract

A 3D Connected Simulation will be developed, which can properly address process design and material behavior at two possible levels of simulations, namely: (1) isolated simulation, and (2) connected simulations. The detailed simulation considers the isolated processes of netshape forging, quenching and machining. The connected simulation will consider the connected sequence of Forging, Heat Treatment, and Machining. Most commercial FEA applications are designed to do only detailed simulations of isolated processes such as forging or casting. They are not designed to consider the sequence of processes, which are required to produce a final project for assembly. This research will develop constitutive relationships that are capable of addressing varying arbitrary histories, which occur at different points in the product, as it moves through a process or multiple processes. Therefore, simple isothermal constant strain-rate tests alone are not sufficient to adequately represent actual process histories. Experimental data will be generated and modeled to permit doing connected simulations of forging, heat treatment and machining. The objective of this research development times.
