Research abstract

AOC operations involve time-stressed decisionmaking in the face of uncertainty, and often, partial information. For AOC teams to excel, they need to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills associated with AOC operations and then practice those skillsin a team environment until the application of those skills become second nature. This Phase II SBIR project is concerned with the development and transition of ProcessTrainT, a web-based team process training system that combines interactive, adaptivecourseware with scenario-based training. ProcessTrain is intended to: (a) allow individuals to understand AOC processes from the perspectives of horizontal and vertical information flows, rule dependencies, and key tradeoffs; and (b) put the acquiredknowledge to use when working with synthetic teammates in a variety of training mission scenarios. The prototype demonstration will be targeted to combat operations. The demonstration scenario will be an air interdiction operation with ISR tasking. Thelocale is an area in Iraq. The mission objective is to interdict a withdrawing Republican Guard unit before they can get back into Baghdad. The underlying simulation allows manipulation of both time stress and information availability, thereby allowinglearners to experience situations that are increasingly more demanding.
