Research abstract

Areas of high poultry production in the U.S. have led to a serious problem of excess poultry litter which presently threatens to contaminate groundwater sources by introducing excessive quantities of bio-nutrients (eg, N,P &K) into the aquifer. This project proposes an economically viable solution to the problem by forming the excess material into large, dense, plastic-wrapped bales which can then be transported away from areas of high poultry production to distant sites where it can be utilized as a much needed crop fertilizer. The bales are impervious to moisture which prevents leaching of the nutrients into the soil; they can be stored indefinitely on-site until they are needed; they are easily transported on standard flatbed trailers, and the litter is now transformed into an asset which can be sold into the market place.
