Research abstract

Technology International Incorporated (TII) shall develop a low-energy, non-invasive, continuous ultrasonic membrane cleaning method appropriate for use in wastewater treatment processes based on thorough investigation of the mechanisms of membrane fouling in wastewater applications. Membrane fouling is the single most important critical problem facing the application of membrane processes to wastewater renovation. This method will maintain near initial membrane flux during the lifecycle of the processs, and subsequently would decrease the size of a treatment system as a result of increased produciton per square foot of membrane surface area. This method would not involve the use of additives or mechanical devices. Biostatic and biocidal agents used for reduction or elimination of biofouling can leak out or evaporate out while in the "laid up" membrane-based system. Other cleaning methods for other types of fouling tend to interfere with the operation of the system. The feasibility of the proposed method will be evaluated in comparison with currently employed methods. A final design will be provided for implementation and demonstration of a bench-scale membrane-based wastewater treatment process.
