Research abstract

70869 The long-term goals for high energy physics research require Nb3Sn superconducting magnets with unprecedented performance and cost reductions for the construction of the next generation particle accelerators. This project will develop an innovative economical process for fabricating Nb3Sn wires with high critical current density and relatively low AC losses. Phase I will have three major objectives: (1) fabrication of prototype high performance Nb3Sn wires, (2) characterization of the superconducting and microscopic properties, and (3) demonstration of the economical advantages of the proposed wire fabrication approach. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The Nb3Sn wires should find applications in the next generation particle accelerator, energy storage, fusion reactor, and NMR magnets.
