Research abstract
Not Available A novel amplification effect of order 30 dB has recently been observed in simple circuit comprised of two parallel Josephson junctions biased into a novel dynamic regime and readout out in a novel manner. This new phenomenon has been reproduced in all five low Tc superconducting devices tested to date. the benefit of the new approach is that while producing substantial gain the new devices has the input impedance, noise temperature, physical size and simplicity of two Josephson junctions. Numerical simulations and prior work on similar physical systems indicate that operation at frequencies greater than 1 THz may be possible with appropriate superconducting materials and device fabrication. Analytic expression, numerical simulations and corroborating experimental results valid below 100 GHz are presented. In Phase I we will extend the device analysis to consider effects up to 3 THz and predict the key amplifier operating parameters. We will also consider the fabrication process and operating temperaturerequirements and assess the implications of these for a practical, commercial device. In Phase II we will fabricate and test a complete device.
