Research abstract
A full scale application of shape memory alloys in intelligent structures requires that the complex interaction between active elements (sensors, actuators, processors) and the host material be investigated. In the proposed research, i) constitutive equations to model the behavior of shape memory alloys under large deformations will be developed, ii) composite laminates will be modeled as a continuum with a micro-macro structure, iii) variational formulation of the governing field equations will be implementation in a finite element code and analysis of sensor/actuator interactions with composite laminates for different configurations or active elements.
