Research abstract
This proposal is aimed at developing marketable product in the form of a software based methodology for the designof dual alloy structural components involving dissimilar material joints and for proper characterization of joints. No such methodology currently exists. The objective of Phase I research is to extend and validate a modeling approach previously developed by the Principal Investigator for assessmentand design of ceramic-metal and ceramic-ceramic joints. The scope will involve more detailed consideration of plasticity and creep deformation phenomena so that the previously developed approach can be extended to dissimilar metallic alloy, intermetallic, and high temperature composite material joints. Specifically, an existing model will be extended such that a joint's load carrying capacity can be predicted by knowing the thermomechanical properties of the constituents (including joining materials) and details of the joining process.
