Research abstract

Innovative concepts based on quasi-optial techniques for developing high performance solid-state devices at millimeter-wave frequencies are described. Using a large number of low power two terminal or three terminal devices, active integrated antenna arrays tha tmeet the requirements of high power solid-state transmitter sources and beam steering capabilities are proposed. Such power sources are more efficient, light weight, small and cost effective than the high power tubes. Quasi-optical techniques are also capable of improving the dynamic range of mixers and low-noise amplifiers. The circuits can be realized in grid configurations using planar circuit topology which is compatible to future monolithic implementation for low cost production. In phase I, research activities will be focussed on developing these techniques and concepts. A few prototype circuits will be fabricated and tested in order to verify the concepts. Development, fabrication and production techniques for these high performance circuits will be addressed in Phase II.
