Research abstract
PSR proposes to develop, fabricate and deliver one rugged protoytpe identification friend or foe (IFF) system for combat platforms and individual weapons sytem. The system consists of the transceiver/transponder units for shooter/victim, respectively; operating instructions; schematics; parts lists and troubleshooting guide. The IFF system proposed can be interrogated by laser pulses or by a covert (spread spectrum) RF "request to transpond". The low probability of intercept, encrypted communication system makes extensive use of low cost, highly reliable, commercially available components. A precision interrogation option commences with a designation laser pulse (one only), followed by a DES-encrypted (or non-encrypted, as commanded) RF message. The transponder is alerted by the single laser pulse, and awaits the RF message at a specified time delay. Receiving the proper message, the "Victim" operator is alerted to the operation. Meanwhile, the message is valiadated and answered with a message containing extensive information about the Victim, such as time, vehicle number and location. Upon receiving this message, the interrogator validates the reply, signals a Don't Fire to the Shooter, and sends another RF message containing at least the recognition of the Victim as a Friend. The Victim operator gets a signal that he has been safely identified as a Friend.
