Research abstract

SOUTHWEST SCIENCIES, INC. PROPOSES A NOVEL MASS SPECTROMETRIC METHOD, * IONIZATION ENERGY MODULATED MASS SPECTROMETRY (IEMMS), FOR THE RAPID DETECTION OF VAPORS FROM EXPLOSIVES, INCENDIARIES AND NOXIOUS GASES. IEMMS COMBINES ELECTRON IMPACT IONIZATION USING A MONOCHROMATIC ELECTRON BEAM WITH ION DETECTION USING TWIN TIME-OF-FLIGHT (TOF) MASS ANALYZERS. ONE ANALYZER QUANTIFIES POSITIVE IONS WHILE THE OTHER OBSERVES NEGATIVE IONS. BY MODULATING THE ELECTROL ENERGY IS IT POSSIBLE TO GENERATE REPRODUCIBLE, NONLINEAR CHANGES IN THE MASS SPECTRA WHICH CAN BE USED TO FINGERPRINT KEY SPECIES WITHIN A GAS MIXTURE. WE ANTICIPATE THAT IEMMS WILL BE COMPETITIVE WITH SEQUENTIAL MASS SPECTRAL METHODS (MS/MS TECHNIQUES) NOW BEING STUDIED FOR EXPLOSIVES DETECTION.
