Research abstract

GRATINGS USED AT SYNCHROTRON FACILTIES PRESENTLY HAVE LIMITED USEFUL LIFE. ORIGINAL MASTER GRATINGS ACCUMULATE FILMS THAT BAKE ON THE DELICATE OPTICAL SURFACE, REDUCING PERFORMANCE. REPLICA GRATINGS HOLD THE GROOVE SHAPE IN THE CURED PLASTIC OR EPOXY FILM AND UPON EXPOSURE TO SYNCHROTRONBEAM THE EPOXY SLOWLY MELTS OR BOILS DESTROYING THE GROOVES SHAPE AND REDUCING ITS OPTICAL PERFORMANCE. WE PROPOSE TO TATAKE A BLAZED ORIGINAL GRATING AND TRANSFERITS GROOV PROFILEINTO THE GLASS SUBSTRATE VIA ION MILLING. IF SUCCESSFUL THISMETHOD WOULD PRODUCE GRATINGS SUITABLE FOR ULTRA HIGH VACUUM, CLEANABLE AND INDESTRUCTABLE.
