Research abstract

Carbon dioxide fluxes to the biosphere must be measured to determine if the rate of CO2 absorption by the environment is changing. Instruments for measuring CO2 should be capable of remote operation in rugged field environments and should be easy to set up. This project will develop a differential absorption lidar system that will be capable of measuring CO2 concentrations from stand-off distances of one kilometer. It is based on rugged, eye-safe lasers which require little electrical power and no alignment. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee In addition to CO2 measurements, the system could be adapted to make measurements of hazardous gases at chemical factories or to check for leaks of natural gas.
