Research abstract

78209S To prolong the sustainability of the natural gas supply over the long term, dramatic increases in production from deep (>20,000 ft) reservoirs will be required. However, one of the barriers to cost effective deep drilling and recovery is the rapid corrosion/erosion of steel tubulars and tools under the severe conditions found at these depths. This project will develop a low-cost pipe coating that features corrosion/erosion protection under the extreme conditions found in deep gas reservoirs. In Phase I, steel will be coated and tested to determine the effectiveness of the novel coatings in high temperature, high pressure, deep gas formations. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to the deep natural gas reservoir application, low-cost steel coating technology should have many applications in the commercial world. These applications include high-performance coatings that can economically replace the filled-epoxy coatings now in service in food and beverage processing plants, meat and dairy processing plants, chemical plants, laboratories, aircraft hangars, jet engine test cells, plant maintenance coatings, pipe coating, and tank coating.
