Research abstract

An innovative technique utilizing a hybrid unstructured/structured grid methodology is proposed. An unstructured grid algorithm will be upgraded to model finite rate chemical kinetics, nonequilibrium particulates, and Large Eddy turbulence. The unstructured algorithm will be coupled to a structured grid solver continuing the same level of physical models for application to a wide variety of complex, unsteady, viscous, chemically reacting flowfields. The hybrid structured/unstructured technique is ideally suited for the analysis of transient multi-body problems such as stage separation, missile launcher/plume interactions, store separation and airborne missile launch. The technique entails utilizing a structured grid algorithm around the various bodies with the unstructured grid algorithm to be used in the free shear layer region between the bodies. This capability will be extremely valuable for analyzing a variety of transient flowfields involving multiple bodies in a viscous, chemically reacting, particulate laden environment.
