Research abstract

MMCI proposes to develop a distributed intelligent control reference architecture capable of providing knowledge based intelligent control of broadband (ATM) networks. This architecture will be based on the novel application of proven real-time control methodology, applied by DARPA, DoD(Navy), and USPS on projects as diverse as autonomous submarine control, and high speed material handling. The main building block of this architecture is a generic control module, providing well defined co-and, user I/O, World Model, and sensory input interfaces, as well as an intelligent state-table based decision process. The adoption of this architecture will provide several benefits, including easy distribution of control modules over several H/W platforms, user supervision/feedback for all automated control functions, a method to transition the simulated control system to the operational environment with minimal recoding effort, and a more maintainable final product. The main goal of the proposed Phase I effort will be to demonstrate the viability of the reference architecture in intelligently controlling a mesh of ATM switches, and to identify the various ATM signaling/management/provisioning features to be supported. In support of these goals will be the creation of code templates, a defined user interface implemented in World Wide Web (WWW) protocols, and a control software testbed. This phase I work will lay the ground work for establishing higher level features required for C3I systems, such as automated network restoration, and dynamic call provisioning.
