Research abstract

Not Available The next generation of amphibious assault vehicles will be capable of carrying 18 marines at a water speed of 25 kts and a ground speed of 45 mph, a significant improvement over current vehicles. Unfortunately, however, there is the potential for extremely high noise levels inside the vehicle cabin. This noise, possibly exceeding 120 dBA, requires individual hearing protection and makes speech communication inside the vehicle nearly impossible. CSA Engineering proposes to develop a hybrid passive-active noise suppression system for the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle. This hybrid system, combining passive and active elements and inherent to the vehicle, will provide global noise reduction inside the vehicle cabin, making protective headsets unnecessary and facilitating verbal communication. Once the system requirements and constraints have been established, the suitability of a number of passive and active acoustic suppression techniques will be assessed. The best performing passive and active techniques will be combined in a preliminary design. A structural-acoustic simulation of the vehicle response including the disturbance sources will be used to evaluate performance levels of the noise suppression design. The predicted attenuation levels, weight, power, and the physical practicality of the design will be used as the metric in evaluating the design.
