Research abstract

Although significant work has been accomplished with thermally stable fuels and additive packages for use in high-temperature applications, research must be conducted to understand how these additives affect the low-temperature performance characteristics of jet fuel, including the formation and composition of liquid phase precipitates (LPPS) and gelatinous precipitates (GPs). Until the chemical interactions, performance properties, and low temperature characteristics of the additive packages in jet fuel such as JP-8 and JP-8-100 are fully quantified and analyzed, the use of these fuels in low-temperature flight operations may place air crews and aircraft in unnecessary risk. Aspen Systems proposes to conduct an extensive fuel chemistry study of these thermally stable fuels including JP-8, JP-8-100 and additive packages, by evaluating them in a qualification matrix of low temperature performance tests. Additionally, we will design and synthesize "Novel Inclusion Molecules" which are hydrophobic molecules with integral hydrophobic interior regions. These unique compounds will effectively encapsulate dissolved matter and thus prevent the phase separation of water. To accomplish this research, we have assembled a world-class team of chemistry experts, aviation fuel experts, and university researchers, including the staff and facilities of WL/POSF.
