Research abstract

70188 For the ultra high-power, X-band klystrons required by the Next Linear Collider (NLC) and future high energy particle accelerators and colliders, the Department of Energy, in 1988, established the goal of achieving a radio frequency (RF) peak output power of 100 MW at a pulse width of 1 s. This goal has not yet been realized. In 1995, the goal was relaxed to a peak power of 75 MW and a pulse length of 3 s. This goal has not yet been realized. This project will complete the development of a 50 MW, 11.424 GHz, high efficiency, multiple beam klystron (MBK). The klystron will use an eight-beam electron gun that is currently under construction in another SBIR Phase II project. Phase I designed a seven-cavity, multiple beam klystron compatible with the electron gun currently being constructed. In Phase II, the electrical design will be optimized, based on beam analyzer measurements of the electron gun. Following completion of the electrical design, a thermo-mechanical analysis will be performed on all critical components. Detailed drawings will be generated, and the tube will be fabricated, baked, and tested to full power. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: It is estimated that between 2000 and 4000 of these klystrons will be required for NLC. The device also would have significant implications for other applications, including RADAR, electronic countermeasures, and communications.
