Research abstract

The overall objective of this Phase II project is the development of Autoencoder Compression Enhancements for Undersea Sensor Data (ACE4USD): data compression algorithms that will improve the U.S. Navy's undersea warfare capabilities. ACE4USD will be designed to achieve perceptually lossless compression, meaning a compressed sonar image retains all features of the data needed for human analysis. This will enable efficient and effective underwater transmission of sonar snippets deemed mine-like by some Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithm. In particular, by achieving maximal perceptually lossless compression, ACE4USD simultaneously increases the number of ATR detections that can be adjudged while an uncrewed sonar vehicle is underway, and decreases the likelihood that ATR detections are improperly classified.
