Research abstract

The DOE requires sources for testing high gradient accelerator structures. These sources require 50 MW power at K and Ka band, a pulse length of ~ 1 microsecond, a pulse repetition frequency of at least 100 Hz, and phase stability for some applications. In this project, a 50 MW 30 GHz gyrklystron amplifier, which provides the required phase stability, will be built The amplifier will have a frequency at the second harmonic of the cycltron frequency and will use the TE02 mode. These features will allow a device to be designed without an inner conductor and with a conventional (non-inverted) magnetron injection gun, thereby minimizing the cost and risk due to mechanical alignment issues. In Phase I, a detailed design of the gyroklystron will be produced. The design will be based on simulations of the cavity, electron gun, output coupler and output window. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: The sources would be applicabe for the testing required by SLAC and CERN. The CERN application may require up to 8 gyrotrons. Other potential applications include very high power terrestial and deep space radar
