Research abstract

This proposal describes a SBIR Phase I program to analyze the feasibility of developing a demand Assignment Multiple Access (DAMA) system that is specifically designed for the unique requirements of telemetry applications. The proposed feasibility analysis consists of creating a System Specification, developing a top-level system design which meets the specified requirements, and analyzing the system design with respect to performance, cost, and other criteria to determine the feasibility of further research and development. The motiviation is the desire for more efficient use of scarce Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum in the frequency bands used for telemetry. It is expected that the biggest gains in efficiency will come through the use of DAMA scheduling techniques as compared to be fixed-assignment scheduling techniques used in current systems. Furthermore, innovative DAMA scheduling algorithms which take advantage of the unique characteristics of telemetry data traffic can be developed to optimize scheduling efficiency. Other techniques for increase spectrum efficiency, such as advanced modulation and coding, will also be considered in the development of the top level system design. ViaSat is an experienced leader in DAMA technology and all aspects of communication system design and is exceptionally well qualified to perform the proposed work.
