Research abstract
Not Available Both energy storage and management are critical aspects of the development of practival MEMS sensors incorporating microbatteries. US Nanocorp has developed a patented fuzzy logic-based methodology to determine state-of-charge (SOC) in a wide variety of battery chemistries. Particularly for rechargeable batteries, the fuzzy logic approach is enabling in that it can analyze complex data which is intractable for traditional SOC determination methods. This represents an optimum opportunity to create a feasible battery management capability in a MEMS sensor. for its part, Bipolar Technologies Corp has successfully proven feasibility of microscopic batteries for both Ni-Zn and LiIon chemistries, and has a pioneering patent pending in this area. It is proposed under this collaboration to develop power generation, storage, and management strategies for powering them. the proposed program will fabricate a functional (u)battery, design a FL-based battery charge management system, assemble and demonstrate a PC-board-level device (interfaced with (u)battery), and demonstrate feasibility of the proposed concept to fully integrate a (u)battery and energy scavenger with a miniature charging system under FL control. The results of the Phase I program will position the collaborators to launch a fully integrated MEMS power supply in the Phase II program.
