Research abstract
Recreation and tourism have become a major part of the economic stability in rural areas over the past decade. Revenues brought into small businesses by travellers into and through rural communities bolster and sustain the local economy. Snowmobiling has become a major winter pastime and has the potential to bring a considerable influx of money into hotels, restaurants, markets and other establishments.
This study examines the economic impact and the technical and commercial feasibility of a new concept in snow trail grooming. Unlike any other groomer on the market today, this concept enhances the physical properties of individual snow crystals resulting in a more durable trail surface. Using the physical properties of these crystals to advantage also allows the trail to set up quite rapidly, minimizing damage by snowmobiles following closely behind the groomer. An extended recreation season is anticipated along with a trail system more able to withstand poor conditions during winter, such as marginal snowfall or melting.
