Research abstract

Not Available Recent studies indicate that there is a need for science and mathematics instruction, especially in 9th and 10th grade, which teaches students about current scientific issues and, provides them with problem-solving skills and technical expertise. Therefore, we will develop instructional materials- i.e., laboratories, for teaching important concepts and methods in ecology for high school science and mathematics classes. These laboratories will involve hands-on experiments, computer simulations using the latest information sources (including the Internet), and problems that require critical thinking. In the first phase of this project, we will develop the instructional materials for several laboratory sessions, construct algorithms for the simulation exercises, create an interactive Internet database, conduct preliminary field-testing, and develop assessment criteria. The instructional materials will teach practical applications of current technology to real-world mathematics and science problems. The general problem-solving skills that are emphasized in the scientific method are applicable to all fields of study regardless of the students' career interests. This project will lead to a laboratory manual with exercises for introductory high school science classes. The manual will be accompanied by software that allows the students to perform complex mathematical computations on a desktop PC with real data that can be obtained from Internet databases.
