Research abstract

Not Available The sophisticated new designs of multi-layer composites currently used in naval technology present a challenging problem of detecting integrity-reducing anomalies to assure safe and reliable operation. Microwave techniques are useful for NDT of these composites due to their penetrating power and sensitivity to changes associated with boundary conditions. However, microwave bending and surface polarization make it difficult to localize the detected defects. Conventional techniques such as ultrasound and infrared imaging do not provide the necessary resolution. Thus, a reliable technique to address this problem must be developed. Recent advances in 3-D x-ray imaging modalities have created excellent potential to successfully address this demanding application. The capabilities of these powerful instruments, however, are presently limited by the x-ray sensors available, which offer a tradeoff between the efficiency and the image resolution and limit the speed of operation. We propose to develop a novel x-ray imaging detector based on a new transparent optical ceramic scintillator to address these needs. The scintillator will be micro-pixelized to provide high detection efficiency without degrading the image quality. The scintillator will be integrated into a fast digital readout to form detector that will allow the full potential of advanced 3-D imaging modalities be realized.
