Research abstract
Sensortex, Inc. proposes to develop and demonstrate a multilayer shielding material suitable for low frequency, high intensity, magnetic fields, such as occurs in rail guns. Magnetic shielding usually relies on absorption which requires a high conductivity-permeability product. Most magnetic materials increase this product by increasing the permeability, limiting its usefulness since they will saturate at low fields when they lose their effectiveness. The proposed system has high shielding effectiveness against magnetic waves but with a much higher saturation field than any single component material. In addition, this high shielding occurs with a relatively low permeability band will have minimal effect on the efficiency of rail guns. This performance will be demonstrated during the phase I program by analysis, fabrication and measurement. During the program, films will be deposited onto various composite materials. Changes in the percentage of the various layers will be used to produce a highly flexible material suitable for various shielding applications, from rail guns to containers. The deposition process itself will result in a lightweight structure which can be directly deposited on complex shapes to avoid seams and joints.
