Research abstract

A NUMBER OF SPACE STATION SYSTEMS UTILIZE AIR STREAMS TO TRANSPORT MATERIALS OR FOR VENTILATION. A REQUIREMENT EXISTS FOR A LIGHT WEIGHT, LOW POWER, REGENERABLE AIR PURIFICATION SYSTEM FOR THE REMOVAL OF TRACE CONTAMINANTS BEFORE THESE STREAMS ARE RETURNED TO THE CABIN. THESE CONTAMINANTS INCLUDE A WIDE RANGE OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, WHICH ARE ARTIFACTS OF HUMAN METABOLISM. SPECIFIC REGENERABLE SORBENTS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED WHICH 1) EFFECTIVELY REMOVE THESE POTENTIAL CONTAMINANTS FROM GASEOUS STREAMS BY ADSORPTION AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND, 2) DESORB THESE COMPOUNDS WITH HIGH EFFICIENCY AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE. THE SORPTION-THERMAL DESORPTION PHENOMENON PROVIDES THE BASIS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A REGENERABLE TRACE CONTAMINANT REMOVAL SYSTEM.
