Research abstract

65882 High-power lithium rechargeable batteries are needed for hybrid electric vehicle applications. However, the conventional oxide cathodes in these batteries have limitations. This project will develop a cathode material with high capacity, high rate capability, and superior thermal stability. The material consists of a doped lithium vanadium oxide/vanadium nitride composite capable of reversibly incorporating and releasing lithium and is suitable for the high-power, high-temperature battery application in hybrid electric vehicles. Phase I will demonstrate that the material has a reversible capacity in excess of 220 mAh/g, which is >50% higher than lithium cobalt oxide, 80% higher than lithium manganese oxide, and 10-20% higher than state-of-art lithium nickel cobalt oxide. The material¿s superior rate capability and high-temperature performance in lithium-ion cells will also be demonstrated. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The new cathode material should lead to a lithium rechargeable battery for hybrid electric vehicles with significantly improved fuel efficiency and cleanness, and should find broad application in batteries for portable electronics.
