Research abstract

"Photonic polymers with artificially engineered nano-structures, promise to control photons in the way that cannot be realized by conventional electro-optic materials. In this Phase I program, Crystal Research, Inc. proposes an innovative high-speed polarization-independent wavelength tunable filter based on novel photonic polymers. Such a narrow-band filter is electrically tunable with a switching time less than 50¿s, which is 100 times faster than any existing optical tunable filters. The application of photonic polymers can create the next generation of optical tunable filter with significant improved performance in a simplified compact device structure. Noadditional optics is required for polarization-independent operation. Precise wavelength selection and scanning in the IR region offer the advantage of high background rejection, so that the scene of interest can be viewed with the highest contrast possible. Narrow-band tunable filter removes unwanted ambient light in the detection of a source amid a cluttered background. The proposed device presents a key component breakthrough for multi-spectral real-time IR-imaging of targets with any polarized light reflections. We will deliver a preliminary prototype tunable filter made of photonic polymers by the end of Phase I program for concept demonstration. The proposed concept of high performance tunable filters will open a novel field of optics using photonic poly
