Research abstract

The objective of this SBIR Phase I project is to develop and demonstrate an innovative Low Cost MEMS IMU/GPS Based GN&C Microsystem capable of performing sophisticated guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) missions for small launch vehicles. Rapidadvances in MEMS (MicroElectronicMechanicalSystem) inertial sensors and GPS chipset technologies make it possible to develop a low cost, miniaturized, lightweight GN&C system to replace current GN&C systems. The proposed system will be based on AGNCexisting products and US patents. The fully-coupled MEMS IMU/GPS chipset navigation system will provide accurate positioning data with shock resistance, vibration isolation, and thermal control capabilities. The flight control system will provide a highdegree of dynamic stability, and achieve the desired vehicle dynamic handling characteristics. It will insure the required flying qualities to improve vehicle operation to perform its flight mission. The unique solution of the combined flight control andMEMS IMU/GPS navigation system will provide enhanced flight control and navigation qualities. In the Phase I project, the feasibility, as well as functions, specifications, simulation, and configuration of the system will be investigated and conducted. This project will lead to an important commercial product, Low Cost MEMS IMU/GPS Based GN&C Microsystem. This commercial product has wide potential applications to general aviation, autonomous ground vehicles, marine vehicles, unmanned air vehicles (UAV),and low orbit satellites.
