Research abstract

The United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Rocket Cargo Vanguard Program has identified a critical need for advanced technology to enable the standardization of containerization and deployment of materials into space. The opportunity presented by the DEploy Material Into Space Experiments (DEMISE) topic lies in developing innovative container technologies that can overcome these limitations. The focus is on creating a robust system capable of maintaining the structural integrity and functionality of large payloads during deployment and exposure in space, thus expanding the operational capabilities of the Department of Defense (DoD) and allied forces. This problem set provides Knight Aerospace with the opportunity to design and develop REFUGE: Resilient Exoatmospheric Freight Unit for Global Endeavors. In this D2P2 effort, Knight Aerospace will conduct R/R&D to develop a prototype of REFUGE, which is a fast, reliable, and versatile method of deploying materials and scientific experiments into space, ensuring their survival in exoatmospheric conditions.
