Research abstract

Lazul Software, Inc. proposes a cognitive phenotyping platform to enhance Air Force pilot recruitment and readiness. This system addresses the limitations of traditional tools like the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) by focusing on critical cognitive traits necessary for success in complex, technology-driven roles. These traits include decision-making under uncertainty, adaptability, task-switching, and cognitive control, among others, which are not adequately measured by current assessment methods. Using neuroscience-based tasks, the platform evaluates over 100 cognitive characteristics through interactive, real-world simulations. These tasks assess a candidate’s ability to handle uncertainty, process information quickly, and adapt to changing conditions. The data collected is processed by advanced deep-learning algorithms to create detailed, multidimensional cognitive profiles for each recruit. These profiles allow for a precise match between recruits and the specific demands of military roles, leading to better initial placement and improved long-term performance. A key advantage of this platform is its ability to continuously monitor cognitive performance, adapting assessment analytics to various performance factors. This dynamic approach ensures recruits are not only placed in suitable roles but are also supported throughout their training and operational careers with ongoing performance feedback and development insights. In Phase I, Lazul Software will conduct a study involving 1,000 Air Force pilots, gathering data to develop cognitive profiles and test the platform’s predictive accuracy. By withholding performance data from 20% of the group, the system’s ability to forecast success based on cognitive traits will be rigorously evaluated. This will demonstrate how the platform can improve pilot selection, reduce training attrition, and enhance overall mission readiness. The platform has broad potential beyond the military, with applications in industries requiring high cognitive performance under pressure, such as finance, healthcare, and cybersecurity. For the Air Force, it offers a scalable, data-driven solution for optimizing recruitment, training, and role alignment. Lazul Software’s platform provides a scientifically grounded, highly adaptive tool to meet the Air Force’s need for more effective recruitment, selection, and management of the modern day warfighter. With its ability to predict and enhance performance based on cognitive strengths, it stands to play a critical role in shaping the future of personnel selection and development in both defense and commercial sectors.
