Research abstract

70168 Accurate knowledge of temperature is a critical factor in the fine tuning of coal gasifiers and systems using integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power generation. At present, there are no robust techniques available that can withstand the harsh operating conditions of the gasifier. This project will develop novel fiberoptic temperature measurement devices and systems based on high-temperature refractory materials, which have been demonstrated to withstand the environment of an IGCC system. In Phase II, these devices will be developed into complete systems and integrated into a suitable testbed reflective of IGCC conditions. Phase I will consist of materials research, testing, and optical device design appropriate to gasifier measurement. The materials that are best suited to the IGCC environment will be determined along with procedures for device preparation and for optically interrogating the devices to determine temperature. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The temperature measurement system should offer greater performance, reliability, robustness, compatibility with gasification systems, integration with existing and evolving control systems, ease of use and on-line replacement. Applications include not only the power generation industry but also materials processing and military applications.
