Research abstract

Our process involves electro-optic signal conversion and is additionally suited for remote sensing applications offering long stand-off distances and excellent EMI immunity. Our approach involves 1) conversion of electronic information to optical PM modulated signals (data compression); 2) optical telemetry via fiber (can be long distance); 3) optical reception and conventional digitization (digitized PM signal); and 4) an ultra-fast digital (PM) demodulation technique which decompresses the information. This process results in 2 or more bits of resolution than that of the digitizer used to sample the modulated signal. In Phase I, we will demonstrate 11 to 12 bits of (non-averaged) resolution at a sample rate of 100 MHz using a transient digitizer and a software based PM demodulation process.
