Research abstract

65100 Large diameter magnetron injection guns, used in high energy physics research, exhibit unwanted azimuthal variations in current emission. This project will investigate the reasons for this variation and develop a 500 kV electron gun with less than 5% azimuthal current variation for a coaxial gyroklystron. In order to design the electron gun, various heater configurations will be investigated to provide more uniform heating of the cathode. Also innovative materials and composites will be investigated for distributing the heat circumferentially around the emitter surface. In Phase I, various heater configurations will be analyzed, built, and tested. Promising modifications to the heater matrix structure will also be designed and analyzed. The most effective techniques will be used to design a 500 kV, 800 A electron gun for a coaxial gyroklystron. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology developed should be applicable for magnetron injection guns for gryoklystrons for driving advanced accelerators and colliders radar. It should also be applicable for high power gyrotrons used for electron cyclotron heating of tokamak plasmas.
