Research abstract

LoneStar NDE Innovations (LSNDE) proposes “Prism: Portable All-in-One NDT Inspection System" designed to transform non-destructive testing (NDT) processes for the Department of the Air Force (DAF). Prism is a novel portable inspection system combining three common inspection modalities; ultrasound, eddy current, and ultrasonic resonance;  into a singular device. Prism will be investigated for multiple use cases within the DAF including sustainment of aircraft, detection of counterfeit parts, and inspection of body armor plating. The adoption of Prism by DAF will improve operational efficiencies and improve the effectiveness of current NDT personnel. Prism’s all-in-one capabilities will create an estimated weight savings of 66%  and cost savings of 30% when compared to the suite of competitor’s devices required to do the same job. Prism is also designed to interface with automated motion systems enabling Prism to be used for automated NDT when needed. Prism allows for easy storage of NDT data for better reporting and implementation of data analysis algorithms to aid inspectors in maintenance and repair decisions.
