Research abstract

This project aims to develop Air Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) technology to maintain satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO). ABEP allows satellites to stay in low-altitude orbits indefinitely, providing advanced capabilities for Earth Observation (EO) and communication payloads. It enables reusable satellites that “maneuver without regret,” improving performance and cost efficiency beyond current technologies. Objectives and Approach:The Phase I objectives are to evaluate satellite geometries and configurations to optimize system performance and minimize propulsion needs. Viridian will collaborate with AstroDigital to identify key design considerations and develop vehicle designs for real payloads. A Phase II plan will refine the best concept to Preliminary Design Review (PDR), focusing on bus design, payload compatibility, and propulsion efficiency.DoD Benefits:ABEP supports the Department of Defense’s (DoD) mission by enhancing EO capabilities with high-resolution imagery (up to 10cm), improving precision maneuvering and situational awareness. It reduces operational costs while advancing space mobility, aligning with DoD’s goals.Expertise and Team Strength:Led by Viridian, with over 25 years of experience in electric propulsion, and AstroDigital’s expertise in satellite bus development, this team is well-equipped to meet technical milestones.Commercialization Potential:ABEP has strong potential in EO and satellite manufacturing, reducing costs and improving resolution for commercial markets. Viridian is in discussions to license ABEP to U.S. companies for VLEO missions.
