Research abstract

THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BRITTLE MATERIALS UNDER HIGH STRAIN RATE LOADINGS IS A MAJOR CONCERN TO THE AIR FORCE IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT OF LOW COST AND HIGHLY SURVIVABLE MATERIALS. THE ABILITY TO VIEW THE MICROSTRUCTURE EVOLUTION DURING SHOCK LOADING IS CRITICAL TO GAINING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL DUE TO RATE EFFECT. AT PRESENT NO DIAGNOSTIC INSTRUMENTATION IS AVAILABLE TO MAKE REALTIME MICROSCOPIC MEASUREMENTS IN THE MICROSECOND AND MILLISECOND TIME REGIMES. THE COMBINATION OF A SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM) AND A MAGNETIC SHOCK LOADING DEVICE SHOULD PROVIDE THE POTENTIAL FOR RECORDING SOME OF THE EVENTS RELATED TO SURFACE RESPONSE IN REAL TIME FOR MATERIALS UNDER HIGH STRAIN RATE LOADINGS.
