Research abstract

The AQUILA system is designed to revolutionize autonomous surface vessel operations by integrating a commercial autopilot with dual Beyond-Line-Of-Sight (BLOS) communications as well as Line-of-sight (LOS) mesh radios, enabling secure and resilient data transfer in currently fielded Air Force owned Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC). With increasing operational demands in the INDOPACOM theater, where contested maritime environments and logistical constraints are prevalent, AQUILA offers a critical solution for extending operational reach and maintaining forward presence. The system supports distributed logistics, reconnaissance, and autonomous missions, while also being air-drop capable, allowing rapid deployment in dynamic environments. AQUILA provides scalable, cost-effective upgrades that can reduce costs by up to 10x, transforming existing vessels into advanced autonomous platforms capable of persistent surveillance and rapid response. It directly supports Agile Combat Employment (ACE) and Resilient Basing strategies, enabling the Air Force to meet critical operational needs in maritime regions like INDOPACOM. Through its combination of autonomy, flexible communication, and cloud-enabled mission planning, AQUILA provides a transformative, easily deployable asset for military and civilian applications at a significantly lower cost than traditional systems.
