Research abstract

The development of advanced time-frequency signal processing techniques and real-time implementation schemes with high-speed DSP chips is proposed, leading to a new generation of high-performance GPS receivers. A unique frequency-domain GPS receiver architecture is set forth, into which the following technical innovations are incorporated: (1) fast and simultaneous acquisition of multiple satellites using FFT-based code correlation; (2) FFT-implementation of maximum likelihood estimation of code offset and Doppler frequency shift, allowing for code and carrier phase tracking in a high dynamic environment; and (3) frequency-domain filtering of multipath and jamming signals to suppress their effects. Phase I effort will be focused on the investigation of algorithms performance and efficiency based on analysis and simulation. A rapid prototyping scheme based on a commercial open-architecture GPS receiver is also proposed in order to verify the functionality of the proposed frequency-domain GPS receiver.
