Research abstract
Hospitals and nursing homes restrain a significant number of patients, especially in bed. Restraintfrequently performed procedure in nursing homes. However, there is no rational reason to restrain pafrom injury, and patient restraint causes injuries and even death. Some alternatives to restraints rattention. This may not be practical given the high cost of medical care. Other alternatives requirepatient, which is objectionable for several reasons. We will produce a computer based monitor to defrom bed by combining outputs of sensors attached to the bed. On alert, the monitor will summon a nufoil the escape attempt. Phase I will demonstrate proof of concept by collecting observations of patsensors to a bed at Amron, collecting data while a volunteer simulates escape, combining the data inalerts to a threshold to determine false alarm rate and probability of detection and specifying a deescape. Phase II will include further monitor and escape prevention development and field testing, lsale to hospitals and nursing homes in Phase III.
