Research abstract

Coherent Logix, Inc. proposes to develop Adaptive Direction and Frequency Filtering for Global Positioning System (ADFF-GPS) receivers. The end product will be a new GPS receiver architecture based on the concepts of software-defined radio and using a newhigh-performance, low-power, low-cost DSP integrated circuit (IC), HyperXT, currently under development. HyperX chips will perform the computations for adaptive direction and frequency filtering (ADFF) based on processing a 1024-point complex FFTs in 10microseconds, operating at less than 100 mW.In the Phase I program, Coherent Logix Inc. will work with customers to determine the appropriate ADFF algorithms to be implemented in an operational prototype solution for Phase II. Throughout the Phase I and Phase II programs Coherent Logix Inc. willtenaciously look to commercialize the technology with original equipment manufactures of GPS equipment. The military market is the immediate target segment for a more robust, jamming resistant GPS receiver. There are a multitude of applications where the military relies on GPS to determine location of theater resources, and providing ordnance guidance tothe enemy position. Our commercialization strategy will be to team with a leading manufacturer of military GPS receivers in order to take advantage of receiver application and customer requirements knowledge. Coherent Logix will focus on being asupplier of the receiver subassembly to add to the front end of the GPS receiver, and let the system integration of the receiver be done by the military systems manufacturer. This same front end will also be able to be sold to the commercial/civilianmarket to minimize interference from man-made sources (jamming) and natural sources (lightening), where we believe the greatest potential will be for commercial aircraft navigation. Our HyperX processor has been reviewed by several major industrialmilitary firms, who have provided letters of interest in and support for the continued development of the technology. The digital signal processor software and hardware that will be developed is also applicable to the commercial markets where there is a predicted explosion of video signal volume over the next decade, including such consumer products as digitalbroadcasting, personal video recorders, HDTV, advanced medical imaging and video enabled PDAs. Coherent Logix will initially target the digital television market for MPEG processing, image format conversions, and signal processing to address themulti-path and Doppler effects associated with implementing the ATSC 8-VSB demodulation standard. The design has already been independently reviewed by recognized industry expert C.B. Patel, who declared that the HyperX hardware/software combination
