Research abstract

DURING HAZARDOUS WASTE INCINERATION A PHENOMENON KNOW AS PUFFING OCCURS, I.E., A LARGE AMOUNT OF ORGANIC MATTER SUDDNELY VAPORIZES IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER. SINCE THE SUPPLY OF COMBUSTION AIR IS NOT ADEQUATE FOR COMPLETE OXIDATION OF THIS SUDDENLY RELEASED ORGANIC MATTER, IT CANNOT BE COMPLETELY OXIDIZED, AND ESCAPES FROM THE INCINERATION IN A PUFF. THE FACT THAT COMMERCIAL HAZARDOUS WASTE INCINERATORS OCCASIONALLY DISCHARGE PUFFS OF TOXIC ORGANIC MATERIALS HAS BEEN A MAJOR SOURCE OF LOCAL OPPOSITION TO THE SITING AND OPERATION OF INCINERATORS. RISK ANALYSIS STUDIES FUNDED BY THE U.S. ARMY HAVE SHOWN A SIGNIFICANT LIKELIHOOD THAT PUFFING WILL BE A PROBLEM IN THE PLANNED DISPOSAL OF THE STOCKPILE OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS BY INCINERATION, I.E., THESE INCINERATORS MAY PUFF, DISCHARGING UP TO 15 POUNDS OF NERVE AGENT TO THE ATMOSPHERE PER INCIDENT. ENERGY AND ENVIRONMANTAL RESEARCH CORPORATION IS DEVELOPING A NEW INCINERATION TECHNOLOGY, THE HYBID FLUID. EXTENSION OF THE NEW TECHNOLOGY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF PUFFING SEEMS EMINENTLY PRACTICAL. THE PROJECT WILL CONDUCT A SET OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS WHICH WOULD DEMONSTRATE SUCH AN EXTENSION.
