Research abstract
Not Available This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will develop a patternable, lightweight, broadband radar-absorbing material that is thinner and lighter than the commercially available materials at a lower cost. In the Phase I program, the magnetron sputtering will be used to deposit magnetic metal and magnetic insulator layers on flexible substrates. The project will focus on determination of the permeability, coercivity, shape factor, magnetization, and thickness of magnetic thin films, and semi-insulating dielectric thin films to achieve broadband microwave absorption in the 400 MHz to 20 GHz frequency range. The project will yield a set of patternable, multi-layer coating designs, microwave-absorbing thin film magnetic materials, and processes necessary for practical deposition of such multi-layer coatings.
